Esther lived in a large white plastered house. It had a red tiled roof and was divided into six separate apartments.

Vilna was a city built along the banks of the river Wilja. Being built by the river, the town sat on land comprised of woods and hills. It was a university town that had many parks, churches, and lovely old houses.

3. What could Esther see from the top of Castle Hill?

When Esther went to the top of Castle Hill, she could see the place where her family's business took up a half a block. She could also see the synagogue that her family attended and the road that led to the lake country where they had a summer home.

4. Why did Esther refuse to go to nursery school when she was four?

When Esther was four, she began to attend a progressive nursery school. One day when they were doing calisthenics on the floor, she discovered that all the other girls had pretty silk panties. Only Esther had panties that were white cotton. Esther told her mother that if she didn't get to wear silk panties, she would not go to nursery school.
