Lesson 1 (from Pages 1-23)

Objective

The students will understand the characters the reader meets in this first part of the novel.

The reader meets the narrator and his family as they struggle through a summer in Gramma’s basement. The narrator, his parents’ and siblings’ personalities are vivid and real through his eyes.

Lesson

Class Discussion: Have the students answer the following questions: Who are the characters the reader has met up to this point? How would you describe each of these characters? Who is the main character? Who else is important? How do you know this?

Small Group Activity: Split the students up into small groups, have them choose one of the characters, and answer the following questions: Which character have you chosen? What do you know about him or her? From whose perspective is this information? How might this person seem different from another character’s perspective?
