This character is the protagonist of the novel. She is 21 years old in the narrative present and the past three years of her life have been more difficult than all the others put together. This is because her single mother had been killed in a violent hit-and-run accident around that time and she has had to fend for herself since then. At the start of the narrative, this character receives a threatening letter from a debt collector, as well as a letter from a lawyer declaring her to be the heir of a woman whose name she has never heard.
