Objective

Section 1, Uncle Remus, His Songs and Stories, 1 through 11

The student will be able to explain the rationale for Joel Chandler Harris's transcription of the Uncle Remus Tales.

Lesson

1. Students will take notes on the teacher's lecture including the following: (1) The book is not a book written for children. (2) Harris was interested in writing down phonetically the dialects of the various slaves prior to the Civil War. (3) The tales and fables in the book come from Aesop, children's fairytales, the Bible, and local superstitions.

2. The teacher will explain the three generations of little boys who came to listen to Uncle Remus's tales and the different attitudes toward the old man on the part of the various mothers of the boys.
