Class Discussion: Why is letter writing important to Celie? What do Celie’s letters tell the reader about her faith? Her childhood? Her future? What other outlets of communication does Celie have in her daily life? Why do you think she chooses a passive (quiet) form of communication rather than an active (loud) one?

Activity: Write a short essay detailing how Celie’s letters document her life. Why might these letters be important for future generations? Why do you think Walker chose to give Celie this outlet rather than simply employing a narrator? Ask volunteers to read their work aloud.
