Olaudah Equiano

A writer and abolitionist, this person was enslaved as a young child. Later, he purchased his freedom and supported anti-slavery groups in Britain. His autobiography details his experiences as an enslaved person in harrowing detail.

Thomas Bray

This person was a clergyman who founded the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (SPG). This evangelist organization promoted the baptism and conversion of enslaved people. It also sought to preserve and promote the institution of slavery.

Jonathan Edwards

A theologian and preacher, this person played a significant role in the First Great Awakening. Though a devout Christian, he found religious justifications for slavery and racial discrimination. He was also a slaveowner himself.

Nat Turner

This person organized a large-scale rebellion of enslaved people in 1831. His rebellion inspired many enslaved people to seek freedom, and prompted slave-owners to use harsher measures to prevent further uprisings.
