1. How does Ivas save Pyotr from a beating?
Pyotr is madly in love with Pidorka and visits her everyday. One day they kiss so loudly that Pidorka hears it and storms back home. He takes a whip from the wall to beat Pytor, but is stopped by Pidorka's little brother, Ivas. Ivas father to let Pytor go unharmed.
2. What does Pytor have to do before he marries Pidorka?
The Devil tells Pytor the gold he needs to marry Pidorka is in a forest. Once there a witch tells Pytor he cannot have the gold until he provides human blood. Bringing him a small child covered in a white sheet, she demands he decapitate the child.
3. What happens to the characters at the end of the story?
At the end of the story Pytor turns to ashes and the gold turns to shards. Now alone, Pidorka joins a convent. Basavruik, who disappeared when Pytor found the gold, reappears to cause more havoc. For example, the tavern that Basavruik always patronized, turns into a hovel.
