Lesson 1 (from Book I: Pages 1 – 101)

Objective

This lesson introduces students to Dave Eggers’ dystopian science fiction novel, The Circle. Students will research the author, the novel’s publication and reviews, and the film adaptation released in 2017. Additionally, students will read the first few pages of the book and will identify and discuss narrative style, mood, and tone. Book I of The Circle opens with an introduction to the protagonist, Mae Holland, via a third-person limited narrator. The mood established in these opening pages is optimistic, as is Mae’s outlook for her new job. The tone, however, indicates a sense of foreboding that will emerge more as the narrative continues.
