Objective

The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the physical setting of the novel. Students will identify and analyze elements from the first three chapters in order to understand how Wyndham depicts a society that is both similar to and different from their own.

The Chrysalids takes place in the future, after a nuclear war has devastated the world as we know it. In the first three chapters of the novel, Wyndham introduces the reader to a society that has adapted to the post-nuclear world. This settlement, known as Waknuk, is both similar to and different from our own.
