1. Describe Christine's opinion about being female before the three ladies appear to her, and explain why she feels this way.

Before the three ladies appear to Christine, she reads a book by Matheolus, but she stops reading because she is disturbed by his claims concerning the immorality of women. Christine is bothered by the fact that all men talk about women lacking virtue; despite being unable to support such negative views of females from her own experience, she yields to the authority of male writers. Christine thinks herself very unlucky to have been born female and questions God as to why he made such a vile creature as woman.

2. Who are the three ladies that appear to Christine, and why do they visit her?

Three ladies appear to Christine during her misery. They tell her that they are the daughters of God and have been sent to Christine to restore order and justice. They appear to Christine to reassure her in her sad and dejected state due to her efforts at knowledge, and they also intend to prevent other women from falling into the same error of believing male authority regarding the immorality of women. The three ladies will assist Christine in building a walled city for virtuous ladies.
