The inn owned by Malcolm's parents is called The Trout Inn. It is homey, comfortable, and welcoming. The narrator states, "The inn was an old stone-built rambling, comfortable sort of place" (1) where all different types of people gather, "gossiping or arguing or simply getting quietly drunk" (1).

2. In what way is Malcolm portrayed as a kind and altruistic character?

Malcolm frequently helps the nuns at the priory across the river when he is not attending elementary school or working in his parents' inn. He meets Lyra when she is just a baby staying at the priory and Malcolm immediately feels very protective of her and wonders how he can help with her care.
