Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1)

Objective

There is a lot of background information given in Chapter 1, relating what has happened earlier in this series. The objective of this lesson is to look at background information.

Lesson

1) Discussion: Is it necessary to give all the background information since this book is the fifth in the series? What does the author accomplish by giving this information?

2) Classwork: Have the class rewrite the beginning of the book. Is there a way to relate the needed information to the reader without giving the background information? Have the students discuss the way it changes the story to have the background information taken away.

3) Homework: Have the students look at a series as compared to a single work. Have the students compare the difference in the background information given and the way that the author presents it.

4) Debate: Split the class into two groups. Have one side debate...
