Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1: The Siren | The Rake)

Objective

In The Siren | The Rake, the author discusses two types of seducers. The objective of this lesson is to analyze the characteristics of each archetype.

Lesson

1) In a journal, create a double bubble map listing characteristics of the Siren and the Rake.

2) Discuss with a partner the qualities of the Siren and the Rake. How are they similar? How are they different? Open the discussion to the class. Who are some people listed as examples of Sirens and Rakes in the text? Ask students to think of other real-life or fictional examples of these two examples of seducers.

3) The author says that the Rake will have trouble in modern America with single women. Write an analysis of the problem the Rake might face. Include characteristics from the map exercise that relate to this problem.

4) Homework. Predict how a Siren and Rake might interact with each other...
