1. How does Wilson argue the Paleozoic Era changed insects?

During the Paleozoic Era, insects became the first species of animal to achieve flight. Somehow, during evolution, one species of insects evolved wings, and later learned to fold the wings back giving the species even further mobility. Finally, the holometabolous group of insects, such as beetles, evolved outer shells to protect those wings.

2. How have leafcutter ants altered the landscape in which they live?

Leaf cutter ants are particularly interesting to Wilson because they live in tropical rain forests where nutrition is not available more than five centimeters below the earth. Leaf cutter ants chew fresh vegetation above ground, and carry it up to six meters underground into elaborate nests.

3. What are "Tramp Species" of ants?

Tramp species are species of ants that do not build elaborate nests underground as most ant species do. Tramp species live in swarms under debris, such as abandoned plumbing, soiled clothing, or dead plant systems. They may live in wall space, or have even been founding living in the soiled bandages in hospital dumps.
