During the Paleozoic Era, insects became the first species of animal to achieve flight. Somehow, during evolution, one species of insects evolved wings, and later learned to fold the wings back giving the species even further mobility. Finally, the holometabolous group of insects, such as beetles, evolved outer shells to protect those wings.
