Luiselli states that "many thousands have died" (17) as a consequence of coming into contact with this object, but that those who use it have no other viable option.

This object symbolizes the desire for justice. Luiselli recalls "every nuance of the first story [she] heard and translated in court," (42) but it is is this "very specific, material" object that "continues to haunt" (42) her. Toward the end of Manu's testimony in court upon that occasion, he had pulled this object from his pocket and treated it almost like a talisman.
