Act One: Scenes 1-2

• A list of characters is provided and a note at the bottom of the page states, “All of the characters were born in Berks County, Pennsylvania” (xiii).

• The play takes place in the working class town of Reading, Pennsylvania in two different eras: 2000 and 2008.

• At the beginning of every scene, Nottage includes a short list of events currently happening in the world at the time each scene is taking place.

• An epigraph composed of lines from a Langston Hughes poem is included on page 3.

• Scene 1 of Act One begins on page 5.

• The scene is labeled September 29, 2008.

• The stage directions note that “in the news,” the “Dow Jones Industrial Average falls 778.68 points, marking the largest single-day decline in stock market history” (5).
