Lesson 1 (from Part I (Chapters 1 - 4))

Objective

The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze the circumstances in which Emira is accused of kidnapping Briar in Part I. Emira is a young Black woman working for a white family, and late one night, the family has an emergency and asks her to take two year-old Briar to the grocery store to get her out of the house. There, a white woman observes Emira with Briar and alerts a security guard. The guard confronts Emira aggressively and questions her about her relationship to Briar, humiliating Emira and only ending when Emira calls Briar's father - an "old white guy," as Emira puts it.
