Character Descriptions
This section provides a short description of all the major characters in the book. This can be printed out as a study guide for students, used as a "key" for leading a class discussion, or you can jump to the quiz/homework section to find worksheets that incorporate these descriptions into a variety of question formats.
Characters
Madeline Arnold - This character is the nineteen-year-old fiancée of the main character's son.
Edmund Darrell - This character is the heroine's lover and the biological father of her son. A neurologist, this character first becomes acquainted with the heroine at the hospital for World War I veterans where she works.
Mrs. Amos Evans - This character is the mother-in-law of the heroine in the play. When this character learns that her daughter-in-law is pregnant, she urges her to have an abortion, explaining that there is a history of insanity in the family.
