Chapter 1

The stone angel at the cemetery is a significant symbol in the book. It serves guide the townspeople to heaven.

Symbols can be very powerful, in both positive and negative ways. The objective of this lesson is to learn some of the important symbols in society and the dramatic role they can play in the world.

Lesson

1) Divide the class into groups of 3 or 4 and require each group to research a symbol which holds significant power and have them debate the significance of that power from multiple ideologies. For example, the American flag has a very different meaning to an American than it does to a foreigner. It even has a negative meaning to enemies of the U.S.

2) Have each student in the class write a paragraph about a powerful symbol in American society and present it to the class in a 5 minute presentation...
