Lesson 1 (from Prologue)

Objective

Prologue--The Stars my Destination is set in an imagined future. Because the setting is as much of a character as the characters themselves, students will understand and describe the background of the Golden Age which forms the backdrop of the book.

Lesson

1) Writing assignment: Based on the information in the Prologue, write two paragraphs describing the situation in which The Stars My Destination opens.

2) One-on-one: In pairs, have students discuss the conflict between the Inner Planets and the Outer Satellites. Call on two or three spokespersons from each pair to describe the war and its causes.

3) Class Discussion: Why do the people of this period not love the times in which they live? Who are the Romantics? Who are the Classicists? Why are the Inner Planets and Outer Satellites at war? What do the conflicts described tell you about human nature? Why is that period of...
