1. Why does Tyler decide to write the story of him and his friends?

Tyler reflects on his past and worries about the possibility of losing some of his memory to the recovery process while receiving the Martian drug. He concludes that he should start writing down his story from memory while he is undergoing the treatment.

2. Define the literary term flashback and give an example of its use in this novel.

Flashback is when a story is set in the present, but a scene or an anecdote is remembered by the narrator and the action "flashes" back to show that scene. The book opens with Tyler and Diane in the present and then flashes back to an earlier time in their lives. Much of the story is written in flashback.
