Objective: Part 1, Chapter 1 The students will be able to draw conclusions from their reading.

1) Possible Activities:
* Have the students discuss in pairs/triads how effective it is for the author to alternate between providing background knowledge and narration on current events.
* Have the students write a paragraph describing each of the characters introduced in this chapter .
* Hold a class discussion where the students will need to draw conclusions as to the events which lead to the change in the relationship between Halley and her mother.

Homework

Have the students write what they believe is the significance of the Grand Canyon trip.

Challenge

Have the students draw comparisons between themselves and one of the characters described so far.
