Objective

Chapter 1 | Chapter 2

The objective of this lesson is to understand the stage that is being set for this story, and to pay close attention to the initial clues. A murder has allegedly taken place at sea; students should learn the terms and language of the fisherman.

Lesson

1. In a full class discussion, find the clues in the first chapter that help describe and identify what kind of town Amity Harbor is. Is it a modern town or is it something out of the past? What passages give us this information?

2. Why do you suppose Ishmael is longing for a heavy snow that will "bring to the island the impossible winter purity" that he remembers? What can you read from Hatsue's responses to Ishmael? Have someone do a close reading aloud of their interchange in the courtroom, and ask the class to write a few sentences.
