1) 1. In a full class discussion, find the clues in the first chapter that help describe and identify what kind of town Amity Harbor is. Is it a modern town or is it something out of the past? What passages give us this information?

2. Why do you suppose Ishmael is longing for a heavy snow that will "bring to the island the impossible winter purity" that he remembers? What can you read from Hatsue's responses to Ishmael?
