The book begins by introducing us to the main character of the story, Ka. This character very quickly becomes the obvious protagonist after we follow his travels to his hometown of Kars and learn that he may not be exactly what he seems. This lesson will examine the portrayal of the protagonist in the book.

Lesson

1. Group Activity: Have the class split into groups of four and create a list of the descriptions given to the protagonist, Ka, in the first part of the book. After your group is finished, have one member share your findings with the rest of class.

2. Class Discussion: What is telling of Ka's nature based on his posing as a journalist in order to return to Kars? What seems to have motivated Ka's return...
