Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1)
Walter Dean Myers has a knack for getting into a teen's frame of mind. The objective of this lesson is to research the author and find out how he uses his writing to connect with teens.
1) Writing: Write a short biography on the life of the author.
2) Group Work: In small groups discuss how the author's life qualified him to write a book like this. What makes his writing style resonate with teens?
3) Reading and Interview: Read some interviews where the author discusses this book. What were his goals? Do you think he achieved them? Why or why not? Does this book make you want to read more of his writing? Why or why not?
4) Homework: Think of your own life. What type of book would you write based on your experiences? Write an outline of a story you could write.
