Objective

Objective: Six Degrees of Separation begins en medias res, midway through the events of the plot. As such, the characters must go back and explain how they have reached the point at which the audience meets them. The objective of this lesson is to understand the purpose of beginning a story en medias res.

1. Divide the class into several groups. Have each group form a hypothesis about what has just happened at the beginning of the play. Each group should present its hypothesis and explain its reasoning. What clues from the text lead them to believe that this is the horrid event that befell the Kittredges?

2. Divide the class into several groups and ask each to think of a movie that begins en medias res. What uncertainty exists in the beginning as a result? Why do you think the writer chose to rearrange the chronology of events...
