Objective

The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze the symbolism of jurda parem. The drug is extremely powerful and addictive, and it enhances the already impressive powers of the Grisha, magical people who have supernatural abilities. Jurda parem is symbolic of power and allure, and the stakes in procuring it are high.

Class Discussion: What is jurda parem? Which characters are most interested in the drug? Which characters have the largest personal stakes in whether jurda parem becomes more widely available? Which characters have already used jurda parem? What does the drug do to Grisha? What are some advantages and disadvantages of the drug?
