Objective

In Act 1, Scene 1, Tess has a school project in which she examines her mother's past. However, her mother believes nothing from the past could have any bearing on who she is today. This lesson will explore how the past impacts the characters in the play.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: Ask the class whether they think events that happen in the past can impact a person in the present. How? Why? Can a person completely ignore their past? Is it important to study the past? Pulling the discussion to the play, ask them what they think about Tess's school project and Sara's reaction to it? Do Sara's comments make sense? Can her past and childhood really have no bearing on who she is as a person?
