Lesson 1 (from Notes from a Trip to Russia)

Objective

Audre Lorde makes a trip to Russia in order to be a representative at a writer's conference, in order to ensure that the travels are well documented, it seems. The objective of this daily lesson is to discuss the purpose of people coming together to discuss common ideas and concerns.

Lesson

1. Have each student make a list of the different groups to which they belong.

2. In smaller groups, have students discuss whether they think belonging to a group is an important part of life.

3. As a class, have the students discuss the power of coming together with others to discuss common goals. What can be achieved? What are the limitations? Do conferences and meetings seem to be productive as a whole?

4. Homework: Have each student write about a group they are in which has created changes as a result of meeting.
