1. What is the role of each of the mother figures?

Each mother in the home serves a role in Anju and Sudha's lives, especially because they have no fathers. Pishi is the girls' widowed aunt who is a source of comfort for the girls. Pishi is a storyteller for the girls, too. Gouri Ma is Anju's birth mother, and she is also the leader of the home. Nalini is Sudha's mother. She is beautiful, but she is constantly worried or disappointed about something.

2. Who is Singhji?

Singhji is a servant for the Chatterjee family. He drives the family around. He has a mysterious past that none of the family members seem to question much. He agreed to work for the family at a low cost. His face is very scarred from a burn and it would appear that he could not get work elsewhere as a result. He says that he had a child, but he does not say much about his family other than that.
