• Edwards begins with a quote from Deuteronomy: "'Their foot shall slide in due time.' Deuteronomy 32:35" (405). This quote is the text for the sermon that will follow.

• The introductory section that follows is an explication of this text.

• Edwards first offers context: the passage refers to the Israelites. Despite being God's chosen people and being offered blessings from God, they persisted in their errors.

• Punishment and destruction, Edwards explains, followed from these errors.

• In four steps, he explains the precise nature of their destruction:

• 1) The Deuteronomy quote is a metaphor, comparing walking a slippery path to living with sin and error. Both the Deuteronomy quote and a quote from Psalms support the idea that the Israelites were always in danger...
