Lesson 1 (from Sing to It to The Doll Tornado)
The objective of this lesson is to discuss the point of view of the first four stories in the book."Sing to It" and "The Orphan Lamb" are told from a first-person point of view. "Full-Service Shelter" is told from the point of view of the dogs, but also the narrator. "The Doll Tornado" is told from a third-person point of view. These different points of view affect what the reader knows about situations and characters.
Class Discussion: Who is telling the story in The Doll Tornado? How are the dolls seen from the outside looking in? What pronouns are used in this story? Is everything that happens told from an anonymous bystander? What is the point of view of "The Doll Tornado"?
Activity: Divide the students into small groups. Have each group rewrite a portion of "A Full-Service Shelter" in first-person point of view...
