Character Descriptions

This section provides a short description of all the major characters in the book. Characters

Horatio Hornblower - This character is a post captain in the British Navy during the Napoleonic wars and commands H.M.S. Sutherland.

Maria Hornblower - This character is pregnant with her third child.

Lady Barbara Leighton - This charter is the aristocratic, younger sister of two militarily and politically successful brothers. She is married to another military man.

Rear Admiral Sir Percy Gilbert Leighton, Knight of the Bath - This character may have married for political reasons and is talked about because of this.
