Chapters 1 and 2

• Ensign Richard Sharpe is in India, trying to make a deal for several pieces of furniture to use aboard the Calliope, a ship he is taking to England. He pays for the goods, but soon finds out that the warehouse the goods are coming from has been burned down and the merchant killed.
• Sharpe disguises himself as a beggar and goes to the home of another merchant where he discovers Nana, the man who sold him the furniture is hiding. While he is there a group of sailors arrive under the command of Captain Chase. Chase demands to see Nana and when he is refused attacks the merchants and his men.
• It looks like the merchants are getting the upper-hand on the British soldiers when Sharpe comes out of hiding and points a gun at the merchant. He and Chase then persuade the merchant not only...
