Introduction

Sharpe's Christmas is two short stories, the first set during the Napoleon War and the second one set in Normandy after Sharpe has retired from the British army. The objective of this lesson is to look at setting.

Lesson

1) Homework: Students will rewrite the basic plot of Sharpe's Christmas and set it in another century, explaining how the different setting changes the work. For example, what would be different if it were set in World War I or II?

2) Class Discussion: Could Sharpe's Christmas have been set anywhere? How does the setting make this a unique story? How do the people in Europe in this era differ from the students' hometown? How did the setting affect the characters? The plot? The themes? Why is the setting important?
