"Shadows on the Koyukuk" is a memoir of Sidney Huntington's life. The first chapter gives a look at Sidney's mother and her and her family's life living on the land in the Koyukuk River valley. This lesson looks at Anna's life on the Koyukuk with her father and her husband.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: What is a memoir? Who was Sidney Huntington? Who was Anna? How was it possible for Anna to trade with an Eskimo trader named Schilikuk?

2) Small Groups: Anna was the oldest child of a large family. She eventually went on trading trips with her father. When did these trips occur? Where did her father go for these trades with Schilikuk?

3) Individual Writing Assignment: Who was Old Mama? Victor Bifelt? Ned Regan? What happened in the relationship between these people and Anna after a fight over trap lines? Please...
