Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1 | Chapter 2)

Objective

In the opening chapter the Dashwoods not only have to cope with new people in their house, but these new people make them feel strangers in their own home. The objective of this lesson is to examine the disruption people can cause when they move into a new environment.

Lesson

1) Divide the class into groups of three or four and ask them to think and research moments in history or the present day when a country has invaded another country. How do they think it has affected such cultural institutions as religion, education and politics?

2) Ask the students if they know anyone who has to move away from their own country and take refuge in America. How do they cope? Do they find better or worse jobs? Have a discussion before asking the students to divide into groups of three or four, choose a country, and...
