Country Slang

Much of 'Race at Morning' and some of the other stories are written with country slang and colloquialisms that bring a certain charm and realness to the characters in the plot. Have the students talk like this for a class period and write about how it made them feel to hear this kind of speech.

Character Collages

Have the students create a collage of their favorite character. Allow each student to present their collage, and discuss the differences in the choices for the characters.

Civil War History

Find an appropriate documentary about the Civil War and show this to the class to help them understand the deep historical undertones of some of the stories in this collection.
