Lesson 1 (from Kim)

Objective

Kim is a young immigrant from Vietnam whose father died before she was born. She makes a conscious effort in the book to identify with her father, and to prove to his spirit that she is his offspring. The aim of this lesson is to understand Kim’s efforts to identify herself with her father.

Lesson

Class Discussion: Where is Kim’s father? How old was she when he died? How does this make Kim feel? How do her sister’s feel? How do you think these differences in emotion prompt Kim to try to identify more with who her father was when he was alive?

Activity: Divide the class into small groups. Have each group develop a theory as to why Kim is trying to identify with her father through farming. Be sure to discuss her motivations, both internally and externally.
