Objective

The purpose of Chapter 1 is essentially to introduce Mr. and Mrs. Verloc, her brother, and her mother. These are the main characters of Conrad's tale. The objective of Lesson #1 is to examine the characters and how Conrad introduces them.

1) Task: Divide the class into four groups and assign each a separate character. Have each group discuss the character they are presented. Consider what they know about their respective characters, what role each plays in the other's lives, how they get along, where they live, and additional aspects of their interrelations. Consider techniques Conrad employs to reveal his characters. For example, what does the fact that they run a pornography operation reveal about their respectability?
