Objective
The objective of this lesson is to discuss the title of the book, and how the title relates to Adah's status in society. Adah is born in Nigeria. Girls are so insignificant in Nigerian culture, that the date of Adah's birth was not recorded.
Lesson
Class Discussion: What is the role of women and girls in Nigeria at the time the story takes place? Why are girls like Adah not wanted or appreciated? What is expected of Adah? How does she fight for the education she wants? Why does she have to steal to be able to take an entrance exam? What does she need to go to university? Why does she marry? Why is marriage the only way to obtain her goals? How does marriage continue to limit her options? Why are her father-in-law and husband in charge of her life and what she does...
