Clark and Carla's relationship parallels this. When it is bad, their relationship is at its worse. When it improves, things get better, at least on the surface.

Sylvia gives Carla this to help in her escape from Clark. However, she returns and when she does Clark returns these to Sylvia. These represent her failed attempt at a new life.

Flora

When this favorite animal of Carla's disappears, her escape from Clark begins. The animal returns the same day Carla does, but Clark disappears her again. It represents what Carla fears may happen to her if she tries to leave.
