In the opening scene of Reaching Out, this person left home for the first time in pursuit of a college education at the University of Santa Clara. This person was the author of the memoir and he had one older brother with whom he was very close. This person felt pride in his Mexican culture, but also resented the ways in which he saw racism negatively affecting the population of migrant workers, most particularly, in the United States. By the end of the memoir, this person had finished his undergraduate studies at the University of Santa Clara and was getting ready to move to New York, where he would begin his graduate studies at Columbia University.
