Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1)

Objective

Precious is continuously abused by her parents at a young age. The objective of this lesson is to discuss the effects of child abuse.

Lesson

1) Hand out material on child abuse to the students. Have each student read over the material and write a description of how Precious fits the profile of someone abused, based on what is known about her in Chapter 1.

2) Divide the class into small groups and have them discuss the material they have read on child abuse. Why does Precious not tell anyone about the abuse? Why does she remain silent in her classrooms?

3) Divide the class into small groups to discuss how different Precious' character would be without the abuse from her parents. How has the abuse affected the narrative?

4) For homework: Imagine that you are Precious' teacher. What do you observe about her? What do you suspect to be wrong...
