Character Descriptions

This section provides a short description of all the major characters in the book. Characters

John Quincy Adams - The son of a former U.S. President, he was groomed from an early age for a political career. He became the first President whose father had also held that office.

Thomas Hart Benton - A senator from Missouri from 1821 to 1844, he refused to go along with Missouri's political leanings toward secession from the Union.

Sam Houston - His political career included being Governor of Tennessee, Commander-in-Chief of the Texas Militia, Senator from Texas, and Governor of Texas until he resigned when Texas voted to secede from the...
