• Steve did not show much interest in running until participating in a three week physical conditioning course at school.

• Because of Steve's participation in the course he decided to join the track team in his freshman year of high school.

• Steve became a very dedicated runner in high school and was unbeaten until his junior year.
• Because of Steve's excellent running skills many schools offered him full scholarships.

• Steve chose to attend the University of Oregon.

• In 1969 Steve ran in the AAU Championships and won 5th place.

Chapter 2

• Steve chose to major in Broadcast Communications at the University of Oregon.

• Steve's teammates on the track team nicknamed him the Rube because of his small town upbringing.
