Lesson 1 (from Part 1: Saturday Night, Chapter 1, The Breeze)

Objective

In Chapter 1, readers are introduced to The Breeze, who is a drug dealer. He is killed at the end of the chapter by Catch, the demon. This lesson will discuss how Travis' own actions led to his demise.

Lesson

1. Class discussion: The Breeze made several decisions within the novel that led him to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and to be eaten by Catch. What were these choices? Do they extend beyond this particular evening? How could he have altered his fate?

2. Split the class into two groups. Have one group list the traits of the Breeze that led to his demise. Have the other list traits the Breeze lacks which could have helped him avoid this situation entirely. Have each present their argument to the other group.

3. Have each student choose an article in a recent newspaper or magazine that discusses...
