Objective

Player Piano is set in the city of Ilium, New York, which is divided into three sections based on the social class of its residents. The objective of this lesson is to examine the setting, as well as the significance of the class system in the story.

Lesson

Classwork:

1) Individual writing assignment: Describe what you know so far about the city of Ilium, and analyze why the town has been divided by social class. Be sure to describe each of the social classes and their status in society.

2) Small group assignment: Make a map of Ilium using the details you know about the city so far. Under the name of each place, write a 3-5 sentence description of it.

3) Class discussion:

-How is Ilium divided?

-Why is it split up that way?

-Where do you think the characters that we have met so far live? Why...
