Prologue - "Grounded"

• Patron Saints of Nothing is a young adult novel related from the first-person perspective of its protagonist, 17-year-old Filipino-American Jason “Jay” Reguero.

• The narrative begins in the Prologue, which is set seven years before the main action of the story.

• Jay describes visiting his grandparents in the Philippines when he was ten years old and weeping over a puppy that died, despite his attempts to save it.

• The adults laughed at Jay’s sensitivity over a simple animal, but Jay’s cousin Jun, who was also ten, came to console him.
