Objective

Fate/destiny. From the beginning, as Pascali describes his first reactions to the newcomer and his feeling that their destinies are entwined, the novel foreshadows the development of a precarious relationship between these characters.

The objective of this lesson is to learn about fate/destiny.

Lesson

1. Class discussion. Let's talk about fate. What does it mean? What is it? Can you think of an example of it in your own life? Do you believe in destiny? Does it affect the way you approach life? Do you think it was fated that Pascali and the other characters would meet? Is coincidence another word for fate? Once Pascali thought his fate was tied with the others, do you think his behavior actually caused that to happen?

2. Homework: Have students write about destiny. Have them ask themselves if they ever were in a situation where they thought it was...
